CONCEPT

LASTFRAME is a Japan-based brand created by designer Takanohiro Okude, who draws inspiration from the diverse cultures he has experienced around the world. Deeply committed to Made in Japan, the brand focuses on traditional techniques that are facing a decline in the number of skilled artisans year by year. Through the designer’s contemporary perspective, these techniques are reimagined and take shape in unique designs unlike anything seen before. While preserving Japan’s traditional craftsmanship, LASTFRAME transcends boundaries of nationality, era, season, and gender, aiming to create designs that are borderless, timeless, and cherished across generations. As a luxury brand proudly Made in Japan, it shares its vision with the world.

The name LAST carries two meanings: “final” and “enduring.” It encapsulates the disappearing artisan and traditional craftsmanship within a “frame,” elevating them into lasting designs and products. LASTFRAME is not just a brand name — it represents the very act of passing Japan’s proud traditional techniques to the future for generations to come.

Through this process, we challenge cultural and societal norms with the aim of creating a globally beloved Japanese culture that lasts for years to come.

STORY

Takanohiro Okude has been one of Japan’s most respected fashion designers, working with local and international brands for years. But throughout his career, he noticed: “There’s so much love and respect for Japanese culture and craftsmanship, but people often struggle to articulate why that is.” This question stuck with him, pushing him to take a deeper look at his own heritage and rediscover his identity.

One day, on his quest for answers, Okude stumbled upon something surprising: a group of incredibly skilled craftsmen working in a weaving factory in his hometown of Ishikawa Prefecture. The craftsmanship was mind-blowing, and it filled him with pride. But as he spent more time with them, he began to see a darker side of the picture. Many of these workshops, especially the ones in his hometown, didn’t have enough young people to continue in their footsteps.

That realization hit him particularly hard. “Japanese artisans produce work of the highest quality—craftsmanship that stands the test of time. Isn’t that exactly what sustainability should be about?” Okude says, “It is vital to pass on the wisdom, technology, and skills of these craftsmen if we are to make sustainability a reality.”

Driven by this conviction, Okude launched LASTFRAME in 2018. His mission was clear: to reinterpret Japan’s traditional craftsmanship through a modern lens and ensure its legacy for the future. He dedicated himself to creating designs that transcend fleeting trends, pursuing timeless quality and relevance that would endure for generations.

COLLECTION

MARKET BAG

Inspired by the simple form and functionality of a traditional market bag. The adjustable strap is made from eco-leather, which has been repurposed from offcuts generated during the leather production process.

OKAMOCHI BAG

A bag featuring leather handles and a very spacious gusset takes its name from traditional “Okamochi,” a food-carrying container commonly used during the Edo period.

OBI BAG

This bag features a handle with a traditional obi sash found in kimono. The concept of "tying" holds historical significance and symbolizes both "connecting" and "wearing" in Japanese clothing culture.

TSUBO BAG

Designed with the concept of a “portable interior,” this bag takes inspiration from traditional “Tsubo” jars, historically used for practical purposes like storing seeds, food, and beverages, but also used as decorative art pieces as well.

TOTE

Tote, meaning “carrying” or “shouldering,” is reimagined as the “TASUKI TOTE,” featuring wide straps inspired by traditional sashes, and the “HINEMOSU TOTE,” designed for all-day use. These totes combine simple forms with intricate knitting and practical functionality.

CRAFTMADE

The “CRAFTMADE” series combines traditional Japanese hand-knitting techniques with LASTFRAME’s contemporary design. It showcases meticulous craftsmanship and warmth brought to life by Japanese artisans.

SILK SCARVES

These silk scarves are woven with techniques that boast a heritage of over 120 years, and feature intricate patterns throughout. The prints are crafted using traditional scarf-making methods, and each piece is finished with hand-rolled sewing by skilled artisans. The soft texture, unique to Japanese production, is a standout feature.

ABOUT THE KNIT FABRIC

Using a rare specialized knitting machine found in only a few locations within Japan, this knit fabric achieves a delicate and intricate texture that standard machines cannot replicate. The material is firm yet lightweight, with limited vertical stretch but ample horizontal elasticity, resulting in a knit bag that offers more storage capacity and usability than its appearance suggests.

SEAMLESS KNIT MANUFACTURING

Produced using Japan-developed whole-garment knitting machines, which enable seamless three-dimensional knitting. The process incorporates heat-sensitive yarns, shaped by hand and fixed through heat treatment in a delicate production method reminiscent of crafting ceramics. The rib-knit structure provides excellent horizontal elasticity, making inserting and removing items easy.
